The Quote
SaaStr got an estimate of $240,000 per year to maintain agent API access across Salesforce, HubSpot, and Atlassian. The company runs with 3 humans and 21 agents making 35,000 to 40,000 API calls daily. They are not paying it.
The Alternative
Their AI VP of Revenue, called 10K, tracked its own API usage for a week and suggested two fixes. Short term: cut unnecessary calls. Long term: mirror the system of record to a $5 Postgres instance and stop hitting vendor APIs as much. The agent offered to set it up the same day.
That creates sync issues and maintenance overhead, but $5 versus $240,000 is an easy call. Lemkin notes the agent proposed it as soon as it heard the pricing.
Why This Matters for Sales Ops
Seat-based vendors are seeing contraction from agents. One API seat replaces 20 or 80 human seats. Salesforce, Atlassian, and HubSpot are all rolling out agent access charges. HubSpot's appears focused on first-party agents for now, not third-party tools like 10K.
Lemkin gets why they are doing it: if you have been growing on seat expansion and that is at risk, you meter API access. In B2B, price increases mostly work. Customers complain, more stay than leave.
But agent buyers think differently. SaaStr already migrated off Marketo because API limits gave them 10 to 20 minutes of access per day. Lemkin says if they were starting from zero today, knowing what agent access costs, they might not pick any of their current stack.
The Wedge for Competitors
Staying with existing vendors is one decision. Buying new is different. Aurasell, a CRM layer on Salesforce and HubSpot, told SaaStr the last thing they would do is charge extra for agent access. Meta's Muse is free, subsidized, and handles work SaaStr used to buy $50k to $100k apps for: customer tracking, competitor tracking, ad management.
One of their team members started building sales workflows in Muse without being asked, because he already had a Meta account and it was easy.
What Sales Leaders Should Track
If you are running agents against CRM, MAP, or ticketing systems, audit your API usage now. Your vendor may already be metering it. Ask your sales ops team what the cost looks like if you scale agent usage 3x or 5x.
If you are evaluating new tools, ask whether they charge for agent API access. If the answer is yes, calculate what that costs at scale before you migrate data. The agent will do that math for you, and it will suggest the $5 option.
