The numbers that matter
Gamma hit $100M ARR with 50 employees. No sales team. No marketing spend. The typical SaaS company at $100M ARR runs 200 people. Gamma is one-quarter that size.
CEO Grant Lee and two former Optimizely colleagues built an AI-powered presentation platform that competes with PowerPoint and Google Slides. They raised $12M Series A from Accel in 2022, then $68M Series B from a16z at a $2.1B valuation. The company is profitable.
Word-of-mouth drove the entire growth engine. A viral tweet in 2023 took them from Product Hunt plateau to 50,000 signups per day. No paid acquisition. People told other people.
Lee is direct about what worked and what he would change. His biggest regret: not hiring sales earlier. Even with $100M ARR and profitability, he thinks they left revenue on the table by staying pure product-led for too long.
What this means for scaling teams
The 50-person team at $100M ARR is an outlier, not a benchmark. Most B2B SaaS companies at this scale run 15-25 AEs minimum, plus SDRs, enablement, and ops. Gamma skipped that because their product spread through users, not sales cycles.
But Lee's admission matters. Product-led growth works until it does not. Enterprise buyers need sales support. Larger deals need human follow-up. The word-of-mouth model has a ceiling, and Gamma hit it.
For sales professionals, the lesson is not "skip sales and go viral." The lesson is timing. Gamma built a product with genuine organic pull before adding go-to-market muscle. Most startups do the opposite: hire AEs before the product spreads on its own, then burn budget trying to push rope.
The other data point: Lee spent three months with 12 people rebuilding onboarding to make the first 30 seconds feel magical. That is product investment most early-stage companies skip because they are too busy hiring BDRs.
Gamma is San Francisco-based with no public ANZ presence. The company remains private at $2.5B valuation. For accredited investors, pre-IPO shares are available through secondary markets.
Bottom line: $100M ARR with 50 people is possible if your product has genuine pull. But even then, Lee wishes he had hired sales sooner. That is the tell.
