CommBank is piloting an AI agent called CommBank Companion that can process business loan applications without human contact. The tool handles income verification and application stages using customer data already held by the bank.
The agent lives inside CBA's mobile banking app and goes beyond chatbot functionality. It takes action on customer requests, learns preferences, and progresses applications autonomously. Customers ask questions about cash flow, financial health, or loan eligibility, and the agent responds using their transaction history and account data.
Worth noting: the tool cannot make product recommendations due to banking regulations. It provides information and processes applications, but stops short of financial advice.
CBA has been building toward this. The bank already uses AI for scam detection and rolled out ChatGPT Enterprise to 50,000 employees. It previously deployed AI document pre-population for business loan applications, so this agent is an extension of existing workflows rather than a standalone experiment.
What this means for business lending sales
If this scales, loan officers lose touchpoints. Income verification and application processing are relationship moments that currently require human involvement. Automating these stages means fewer conversations, less relationship building, and reduced opportunity to cross-sell or upsell.
For financial services sales teams selling into banks, this is a signal. CBA leads on digital adoption among the big four (Westpac, NAB, ANZ typically follow). If agentic AI works for business lending at CBA, expect similar pilots across competitors.
The implication: sales tools for business lending need to integrate with AI workflows, not replace them. Lead generation, CRM, and origination software that assumes human-first processes will need rethinking. AI sales assistants for loan officers may become AI workflow integrations instead.
CBA has not disclosed sales org changes tied to this pilot, but if the agent handles application progression, quota structures and territories will eventually need adjusting. Attainment gets complicated when AI does half the work.
