Australia is heading into a $60 billion data centre buildout, driven by AI adoption that Oxford Economics expects to jump from current levels to 50% penetration by 2035, eventually hitting 80% by 2040.
The numbers are significant. AWS committed $20 billion to Australian data centres by 2029. Microsoft committed $25 billion to AI and cloud infrastructure. The country now has 162 data centres with 90+ in the pipeline and roughly $155 billion in investment capital lined up.
Who is building
NEXTDC is the largest ASX-listed independent operator, running facilities in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Canberra. CDC Data Centres, backed by Infratil and the Future Fund, landed the largest Australian data centre contract so far: 555MW with an investment-grade US customer. AirTrunk remains privately owned and is expanding aggressively.
Equinix, Digital Realty, Macquarie Data Centres, and Goodman are also active. That is the account list if you are selling power, cooling, networking, security, or AI-ready infrastructure.
What it means for sales
This is greenfield territory for vendors. Hyperscale operators need partners for everything: physical infrastructure, enterprise software, security, connectivity. Most of these operators are scaling quickly, which means they are hiring AEs, sales engineers, and channel managers.
CDC is positioning hard into AI and GPU workloads. NEXTDC is expanding into Asia and New Zealand. AirTrunk is chasing hyperscale contracts. Macquarie is stronger in government and enterprise.
The challenge for sales teams: these are long cycles with technical buyers, and the competitive set is crowded. You are not just competing with other vendors, you are competing with hyperscalers building their own infrastructure and sovereign-backed platforms.
Job outlook
Oxford Economics flags that AI adoption will reshape job types, with graphic design, web design, and data entry roles most exposed to automation. The flip side: infrastructure sales, technical account management, and sales engineering roles tied to AI deployment are growing.
If you are selling into enterprise IT or infrastructure, this is the wave. The money is committed, the operators are known, and the buildout is happening now.
